Bloody weekend at the box office
This weekend, blood and gore awaits moviegoers as two violent and intense thrillers, "Blood Diamond" and "Apocalypto", will be battling head-to-head.
Both films are noted for their extreme amounts of violence and gorey scenes. "Apocolypto" is described as "unrelenting, often grisly, and ultimately sadistic" by CNN.
In a hilarious piece about the making of the film, Mel is said to have yelled at his cast, "I need to see the blood! Your character is going to die soon! Attention! We are all dying here! We are all dying!"
"Blood Diamond", which is being released at the height of the Christmas jewelry shopping period, is said to turn people off from buying diamonds due to its intensity. It features scenes where enemy rebels turn young boys into killing machines and chop off limbs of innocent people to spread fear.

“Blood Diamonds” exposes violent gem trade
The upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio film "Blood Diamonds" is stirring
up a lot of emotion even before its opening.
The film focuses on so-called "blood diamonds" or "conflict diamonds",
which are mined in Sierra Leone and used by rebels to fund
their violent activities, which have included the displacement
of millions of people.
Fortunately, the global diamond industry responded to the issue of
conflict gems in 2002 with a U.N.-mandated initiative to certify that
diamonds are mined and sold legitimately. The industry now claims
more than 99 percent of diamonds for sale are from conflict-free sources.
But that hasn’t stopped the protests and the claims that
the violence continues.
